A chronological survey of the space conquest, from the launch of Sputnik 1 (1957) to the early 1970s. Across ten chapters, Charles-Noël Martin traces the Soviet and American programmes in parallel: artificial satellites, crewed flight, robotic then crewed lunar exploration (up to Apollo 15), and probes to Venus and Mars. One chapter covers other spacefaring nations (Europe, France, China, Japan), another the future outlook. Two technical appendices address celestial mechanics and space physiology.
