A popular science overview published in 1963, this work introduces French general readers to the history of rockets (from early gunpowder projectiles to contemporary missiles and artificial satellites) along with the physical principles of reaction propulsion. Organized in three progressive sections, the book covers elementary cosmology, the history of rocketry from Congreve to Tsiolkovsky and Oberth, and the state of the space race as of 1963: military missiles, satellite technology, human spaceflight, and the lunar objective. The work concludes with a speculative narrative imagining a voyage to the Moon aboard a fictional spacecraft.
