Soviet physicist and engineer specializing in space flight mechanics, Vladimir Isaakovich Levantovsky authored several technical works on cosmic navigation. His Raketoy k Lune (Rocket to the Moon, 1960), translated into French as En fusée vers la lune (1963), presents the mathematical foundations of lunar trajectories with rigour and systematically corrects errors widespread in popular science literature of the period. He subsequently published Nebesnaya Ballistika (Celestial Ballistics, 1965) and Mechanics of Space Flight in Elementary Exposition (1970; 2nd ed. 1974; 3rd ed. 1980), which became standard references in Soviet astronautics education. His work consistently combined pedagogical clarity with mathematical rigour and a sustained effort to dispel the misconceptions propagated by popular science journalism.
