A technical treatise on the engineering of satellite telecommunications systems, growing out of teaching at the École nationale supérieure de techniques avancées (ENSTA). It runs through the whole chain: link budget and noise, analogue and digital modulation schemes, multiple-access techniques (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA), network architecture, orbital mechanics and coverage geometry of geostationary satellites, the space environment, on-board subsystems (stabilisation, power, thermal control), launch vehicles, earth stations and reliability. Numerous worked examples (INTELSAT, Symphonie, Molnya, military satellites) illustrate the state of the art in the mid-1970s.
