The book recounts the first decade of Soviet astronautics, from the launch of Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957 to the Soyuz flights of 1968. It covers the precursors (Tsiolkovsky), Gagarin's and Tereshkova's Vostok flights, the Voskhod missions and Leonov's spacewalk, lunar and planetary probes, automatic satellites and military applications. A detailed chronology of Soviet space flights rounds out the volume.
