A Soviet pilot-cosmonaut, Gherman Stepanovich Titov (1935–2000) was the second human to orbit the Earth, completing 17 revolutions in 25 hours and 11 minutes aboard Vostok 2 on 6–7 August 1961. The youngest person in history to fly in orbit (aged 25), he was also the first to sleep in space and the first to suffer from space sickness. Born in the Altai region, trained as a military fighter pilot, he was selected for the inaugural Soviet cosmonaut corps in 1960. Following his spaceflight, he pursued a military career, rising to the rank of Colonel-General, and served as a deputy to the Supreme Soviet.
