A commemorative volume published by the European Space Agency to mark twenty years of European cooperation in space (1964-1984). It gathers some thirty personal recollections in three sections: "The Pioneers" (founders and directors of ESRO, ELDO and ESA, Amaldi, Auger, Bondi, van de Hulst, Hocker, Lüst, Gibson, Curien, Quistgaard…), "The Friends" (international partners: Canada, India/ISRO, the United States/NASA, Eutelsat) and "The Industrialists" (Aérospatiale, Dornier, ERNO, Matra, Selenia Spazio…). The contributions retrace the genesis of the European space organisations from the Meyrin conference (1960), the 1971-73 "package deal", the development of Ariane and Spacelab, and the building of an autonomous European space capability.
