Frederick Ira Ordway III (1927-2014) was an American space scientist, historian and writer. Educated at Harvard and the University of Paris, he joined Wernher von Braun's team at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville and, from 1960 to 1964, headed space information systems at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. A scientific consultant on Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (on Arthur C. Clarke's recommendation), he was above all a prolific historian and bibliographer of rocketry, co-author with von Braun of History of Rocketry and Space Travel (1966) and The Rockets' Red Glare (1976), and author of The Rocket Team. The longest-serving member of the American Rocket Society (which he joined in 1939), he assembled one of the foremost collections of spaceflight imagery; the American Astronautical Society's Ordway Award for spaceflight history is named in his honour.
