Heinz Gartmann

DE 1917 – 1960

Heinz Gartmann (1917–1960) was a German journalist and science writer specialising in aeronautical and space technology. Close to post-war German technical circles, he published several books in the 1950s on the history of rocketry and astronautics pioneers, translated into English and French, which helped introduce West European readers to the founding figures of space exploration. His direct access to the rocket research community allowed him to gather first-hand accounts, even if he never formalised them into scholarly apparatus. He died in a road accident in 1960, aged forty-three, just as the Space Age he had anticipated was beginning to unfold.
