Richard S. Lewis (1916-2001) was an American science journalist. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University (1937), he worked as a reporter and science editor at the Chicago Sun-Times before becoming editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the leading journal of science and public affairs. A respected commentator on spaceflight, he wrote several books that became classics of the genre: Appointment on the Moon (a history of the U.S. space programme from Explorer I to the lunar landings), The Voyages of Apollo, From Vinland to Mars and Challenger: The Final Voyage. He also authored A Continent for Science, a history of the scientific exploration of Antarctica, and helped found the science-communication programme at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
