François de Tricornot de Rose (1910-2014) was a French diplomat and a major figure in post-war nuclear strategy and scientific cooperation. A member of the UN commission for the international control of atomic energy (1945-1949), he was among the founders of CERN, whose Council he chaired in the late 1950s. Ambassador of France to Portugal and then permanent representative to the NATO Council (1970-1974), he devoted most of his career to defence and deterrence issues. The author of several strategic essays, including Contre la stratégie des Curiaces (1983), he wrote the preface to La guerre dans l'espace. He died at the age of 103, the last of CERN's founding fathers.
